Shorelands News 2007-2009 Season

Thanks to our loyal guests for making these last two years very good seasons. We made some good strides over the last years. The Condo buildings were totally finished and rented out. Everyone loved our newest 2 bedroom, D1B unit type. And the new studio, unit type Q2, was well received as well.

All Phase 1 condos were sold in 2008, but remain rentable.

In fall of 2008 we began Phase 2 by moving the large building in back of our E/B and H units back by 50 feet and remodeling the building into one studio(new G unit type) with solid sound proofing and an adjoining 2 bedroom cottage unit(new K unit type). These units will be completed for June 2009 occupancy and are on the market to be sold. They are both the largest studio and largest 2 bedroom units in the complex.

We added screened gazebos out back of the one and two bedroom condo units, as well as to several of our regular family units. The gazebos have picnic tables inside and were very appreciated by those guests having the use of them.

The spring weather last year helped our beach while taking away some sand from the other area beaches. The dunes gained more sand which made for a nice area, especially during high tide.

Our staff had several returning members, who will be returning this spring for spring cleaning as well. Ray returned for another season in the office, and our son, Hans was back in 2007 for his last year in the laundry. We will miss him, He moved to Chicago to work towards his love of theatre, and I am making plans to have that important area covered with one of our returning staff.

Our own Uncle Fred was with us through 2008 to help keep the pool clean. In fall of 2008 he accepted the pastorship of the Kennebunk Landing Chapel on Summer Street and will be found there each Sunday at 10:30 am.

We began several new ‘green’ policies and continued others.

Namely: We recycle and added paper and regular plastic and glass to our ‘returnables’ group. There is a ‘Recycle” container by the vending machine on the grounds. Every so often, unfortunately, our guests mistake it for the ‘Trash’ container next to it. We will try to make the RETURNABLES more visible.

We keep the various detailed Recycle containers out back, for our staff. They collect these items during room cleaning and then sort it into the correct areas.

We also changed out most light bulbs, where practicable, with new energy efficient light bulbs. Our Soda and Snack machine is connected via an energy efficient switch. We keep our pool clean via a salt oxidation system, that allows us to not use chlorine and is very easy on our guests. We discuss energy and safety issues weekly with our staff to keep informed of anything needing attention.

And, new last summer, we instituted a ‘green’ towel replacement policy during daily room cleaning. This proofed sometimes confusing to our guests, when they did not receive new towels because the old ones hung up instead of being placed on the bathroom floor. We are committed to continuing our ‘green’ policies, and will work harder to make every guest aware of this.

2008 Improvement Plans:

We have had free Wireless Internet Access in addition to the PC in the Guest Café for the last several years now. We will try to insure that this wireless network is accessible all across our grounds and units.

We will continue to improve our grounds, including adding more curb appeal to our road frontage. Our outdoor fireplace was remodeled by my son Christian using granite stones and driftwood. We replaced our pool furniture and some of the toddler play things. Additionally, we added some of the nice cedar siding we use on our condo units to the front of the house/office. Last year we had ordered new granite steps for the office entrance. Unfortunately, we could not get a satisfactory replacement schedule and so it was not implemented. This was done in summer of 2008.

We replaced one sleeper couch with a futon with storage drawers in the E/B unit, and hope to replace several other sleeper couches in other units with futons as well. We purchase them with a great futon mattress, so this should actually improve usage of this additional sleep mode.

2009 Improvements.

Our pool will receive a new liner and coping. The driveway will be patched, leveled and sealed. Several existing cottage buildings have also received new foundations and granite steps, as well as Cedar siding. And our fireplace area is slated to receive a landscaped sand surround.

Again, thank you for your interest and patronage with us. We do appreciate all of our guest. If we can improve something you feel needs our attention, please don’t hesitate to call or email.

Sonja Haag-Ducharme and Family.
