Spring 2006 Shorelands News Letter
Last year we completed another good year at Shorelands Guest Resort. We want to say a hearty Thank You to all of our Guests, many of you have been returning for several years and often! We are very grateful for your patronage and vote of confidence in us. Thank You Again.
Staff:
Our son Hans was in the Laundry for another summer. Michelle returned for her 4th season, and several local women were a great help. Our foreign staff worked well, coming from Russia, Belarus, and the Dominican Republic.
My son Christian joined us midway through the year. He has a special task, more of that later
For 2006 season, we have some new staff, and one person, Michele McCrann, returning after a 4 year absence. So this year we have the ‘blonde’ Michele, spelled with one ‘L’, in place of the dark haired Michelle, two ‘LL’s.
They have been busy spring cleaning. Fred is also back, painting and sprucing up each unit as it gets cleaned.
Hans will be with us for another summer, he is saving to complete college.
Our son Johann completed his studies at Gordon College last week. After a trip to Israel, he will be home for a while, then go Job searching.
We expect several Russian and Slovakian students to join us for the season.
Two are friends of Natalia, who was here last year and in 2003.
Michelle(two “LL”s) may be working the office some evenings as well as Ray, our gentleman with the accent.
Family Reunions.
We continue to host several family reunions each season. Some have been with us now almost since we became Innkeepers!! I hesitate to single out a group, but you know who you are! We are very exited to have these groups and to be able to make them feel welcome. Thank you for your continued confidence. This year we again picked up a few more first time groups.
Plans For 2006.
Christian and I have been busy since last fall. We are completing the first phase of converting our cottage units to condominiums. Former units # 1 to #8A, our D2J, Q, one D, one E, and D1B unit types, comprising 4 cottage buildings, were converted. We dug a trench and buried the utilities, then had the buildings lifted up to pour steel reinforced concrete platforms underneath them. The buildings are now 2 feet off the ground. They have beautiful, pink, Maine Granite steps, patina green Metal Roofs, and Blond Cedar shingles as well as energy efficient large round top windows and new dutch doors.
We have 2 studios, 1 one bedroom, and at least one 2 bedroom cottage For Sale. Many of you may have received our mailing. We are offering these to our Lodging Guests first, before doing a general advertising.

Our family is planning to remain here as well. The house will become a condo unit for us. This is a very unique opportunity to own a part of these beautiful surroundings and being able to walk to the beach. It can also be a great investment, since the units can be rented out to help with expenses. Obviously, I have historic rental income per unit and this can only increase with the new changes inside and out.
Lodging Rentals for 2006 season.
The other buildings and units will remain the same for this season. We have been busy accepting your reservations. It is my plan to release any condo units not sold into this season’s rental pool. This should happen sometime by July 1.
I already have a wait list of current guests that are interested in upgrading their reserved unit.
PLEASE, review our very attractive 2 and 3 night Getaway Packages for 2 persons under our ‘Packages’ menu bar. We offer these excellent deals each Spring til June 15, and again after Labor Day.
Of Other Interest.
We will continue to operate the Resort as usual until all cottage buildings have been converted. I do not have an exact timing for this. It may still take several years. But we are planning to lift up the next set of buildings this fall and work on them over the winter.
The rains have not hurt us too much, other than in delayed guests. Route 9 was closed down for a few days in mid May during the flooding. One little inlet going out to sea down the road from us overflowed across Route 9. You could still come to us via Brown Street. We enjoyed our notoriety as a new peninsula!! But DOT was very fast in digging up the road, installing a new culvert, and then closing and tarring that portion of Route 9 again. After 2 days the road was as good as new.
We offer this news with our sincere Thanks and hope to see many of you again soon! Sonja and Family.
Shorelands Newsletter 5/16/2005
We had another good year and are very thankful for our many return guests.
2004 Improvements:
We installed a wireless internet connection in our Guest Café.
We switched to a new Hot Tub with more Jets, still using Ozonator technology
along with chemicals for better sanitation. We also replaced the Soda/Snack
Machine with a new one that takes Dollar Bills as well as coins(big improvement
for us!!).
2005 Plans:
We have some maintenance projects going on. New steel doors on some units, a
new, single jacuzzi bath tub for one of our LM units; and we are beginning to
re-shingle some roofs. I am also hoping to install more vinyl screen doors.
This year, I have finally found a Landscaping Person that agreed to come,
actually showed up, AND then has continued to come. (For several years only one
of the above would happen once) Toni has been reshaping and cleaning and
planting our flower beds and I am hoping for very beautiful garden areas and borders.
Staff and Family News:
Our sons Johann and Hans were here last year for the summer. This year, only
Hans will still be with us. Johann will stay around his Gordon College Campus
for the summer, his last summer before graduating next May. My son Christian was
here for a few days last September, and I expect to see him again for a while
this summer, when Manhattan gets too hot. Scott, my husband was gone all last
season but will be here for part of this summer. Our uncle, Fred, will be taking
care of the pool and grounds again. Frank, our maintenance guy from several
years ago, is also back with us and they are busy putting on the finishing
touches inside and outside each cottage unit.
My grand daughter Elicia has begun working with us recently. And Michelle is
back for her third year. We are very grateful for her dedication. Ray, our part
time Front Desk Clerk just arrived, back from wintering in Florida. Also, Dacha,
from Belarus, is excited to be coming back for her third summer. And Natalia
from Russia will be returning after taking last summer off. A few local
housekeepers round out our excellent staff.
I do hope you appreciate our new web site and this New Page. I plan to keep you
updated here, as we make changes and new things are being done.
As always, we are grateful for your continued patronage and wish you blessings
with all you do.
Sonja Haag-Ducharme and Family.
